Time needed: 1 hour.
Makes: 2 – 4 servings
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon oil
1 piece medium white onion
2 tablespoon garlic, minced
6 pieces loaf bread slices, chopped
½ cup milk
250g ground beef
250g ground pork
Salt, to taste
Ground black pepper, to taste
½ cup soy sauce
¼ cup oyster sauce
3 – 4 pieces calamansi
1/8 cup white vinegar
½ cup banana ketchup
2 tablespoons garlic, finely minced
1 cup lemon/lime soda (sprite / 7up)
1/3 cup brown sugar
Salt, to taste
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter and oil together then add the minced white onion. Cook until the onion caramelizes, season with salt and pepper. Set aside to cool.
In a bowl, combine chopped bread and milk. Mix well and allow to soak for about 5 minutes.
To the same bowl, add pork, beef, caramelized onions, and onions. Season well with salt and pepper and mix well. Leave to marinate for at least 20 minutes so that the flavors develop.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Form meatballs that are about 2 tablespoons in size and place onto a greased baking sheet.
Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 18 – 20 minutes, until cooked through.
In a wide and deep pan over medium heat, add soy sauce, oyster sauce, calamansi juice, vinegar, banana ketchup, garlic, lemon-lime soda, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is well combined and bring to a boil.
Bring the sauce to a boil then lower temperature. Cook until thickened to a syrupy consistency.
Add baked meatballs into the sauce and allow them to simmer in the sauce for 5 minutes on low heat before serving.
